The plant of the week is a stumper this week. Found in northern China, this plant is hardy in MN, growing into a large upright shrub 12' tall and 8' across at least. In the wild it can assume the size and shape of an ornamental tree reaching 25' tall. The blooms appear slightly pink and nondescript from a distance, but closer inspection reveals strikingly tropical-looking blossoms borne in short trusses. It flowers heavily in early to mid-May. Identify it correctly and receive Mom's undying respect.
