PREMIUM OUTDOOR FABRICS WEAVE PERFORMANCE AND STYLE

The line between indoors and outdoors clearly has blurred when designing spaces for today’s “casual elegance” lifestyles. We remodel interiors to embrace the natural environment and view. Yet we understand that Minnesotans also want their outdoor living spaces to feel like extensions of their homes.
Choosing the right outdoor fabrics is a smart way to meld the two worlds and add a splash of color and class whatever the weather.

Cōv Edina Patio by Mom’s

Need inspiration? Look no further than Cōv Edina the space that anchors the upscale France Ave. shopping experience better known as the Galleria. From inside the restaurant, the patio furnishings look like they would be right at home on a sheltered Nantucket porch. But sit on the hanging swing or the lounging couches under the open pergola and outsized Tuuci umbrellas and you quickly understand why they’re more than iconic Instagram destinations. The cushions are comfortable and engineered to hold their beauty.
Mom’s provided cushions made from supple but highly stain-resistant, solution-dyed, acrylic fabric. The material resists sun fading, rain showers and spilled drinks. It’s the perfect choice for casual, pet-friendly socializing.
Heather Sweeney, Nationally accredited landscape designer
“I would always recommend a high end durable product. The quality of furniture is greatly tied to the amount of time a homeowner will spend outside, especially in Minnesota, it is important to be outside the few moments we have. Budget outdoor furniture will absorb water, rip, stretch, fade, mold and deteriorate quickly, which creates lots of plastic waste. When selecting outdoor furniture it is important to treat it like and investment, as quality products will be around for years to come. Another benefit of buying high quality is that three years down the road when you decide to expand your outdoor seating, they will more likely still carry the same styles and fabrics, whereas budget brands change inventory and lines continuously.”

4 FABRICS FOR PATIOS AND DECKS

Outdoor fabrics fall into four categories:
  • Solution dyed acrylics and olefin fibers

  • Marine vinyl (it’s not just for boats!)

  • PVC mesh

  • Polyester

Marine vinyl resembles leather, it’s the most durable and weather-resistant for bar stools. It is not the most attractive solution, but holds up well in areas of large water traffic. Solution dyed acrylics and solution-dyed olefins offer premium outdoor performance and durability with prices to match. They are treated for water, stain and UV-resistant, making them our most recommended fabric options. These solid-color fabrics are a good choice for umbrellas, awning and cushions that need to look good for many years. PVC mesh fabric works well on pool deck furniture because it dries fast and resists fading and stretching. Polyesteris, the entry-level outdoor fabric, can’t match the performance of other materials, but, it is the most affordable of all the materials! Another bonus is that it’s available in attractive prints.

MIX IT UP!

When Mom’s designers create outdoor spaces they like to mix materials. For example, they incorporate bold polyester print throw pillows with solid dyed acrylic cushions and umbrellas.
Whatever fabrics you use outdoors, they will keep cleaner and last longer if covered or removed during harsh weather. Click below to schedule an appointment and let our designers help you choice the right materials for your outdoor living space!
