After a tragic family loss, the couple wanted their Minneapolis home to serve as a magnet for two young daughters and their friends. Although the property was near Minneapolis’ Lake Harriet, they were after an upscale Hamptons vibe that emphasized water, casual luxury and fun. In fact, they set the bar so high the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) featured the home and landscape makeover as its Show House tour property.
The landscape design contractor knew just the thing to create a setting so magical that eyes would alight on the backyard scene the moment tour-goers walked through the home’s front door. Today, visitors still remark, “I don’t even feel like I am in Minnesota anymore.” The ‘happy place’ draw also has had the desired effect on its young users. After their first summer, Susan reports, “In 20 years, we have never used a backyard more.”
Back yard transformation

Premium synthetic turf by the pool goes right to green as the snow melts. The owners now wish they had finished their entire lawn that way. “I love my faux lawn,” Susan says.
Exotic Ipe decking provides rich natural beauty and projects quality.
The pergola and tree lights are on timers and turn on automatically at dusk.
Extremely hard and tight-grained Ipe decking from South America offers superior durability and slip resistance.
The ground level deck is installed in a hidden vault for heightened safety and aesthetic appeal.
Lilacs replaced the potted palm trees by the hanging lounger deck after the show tours to avoid annual replacement costs.
Premium synthetic turf, rather than natural grass, installed by the limestone pool surround serves as a soft patio that dries fast. It deters the family’s digging dogs and never needs mowing. Susan confesses, “I was skeptical but now I wish we had done the whole lawn!”
Sprinklers installed with synthetic turf in the dog’s outdoor kennel area automatically flushes the area into the well-drained soil and prevents muddy paw prints indoors.
