The Canopy Porch transformed a small, steeply sloped, and previously unusable backyard into a year-round outdoor retreat. Designed as a seamless extension of the home, the modern yet inviting addition features retractable screened openings, a fireplace with infrared heaters, ceiling fan, minibar, and a dedicated dining area. Expansive bi-fold doors connect the porch directly to the home, creating an effortless indoor-outdoor living experience.

To better accommodate the homeowners’ growing family, the kitchen was expanded by squaring off the existing breakfast nook and extending the footprint three feet into the backyard. Replacing the original windows with a bi-fold door improved circulation while strengthening the connection between the kitchen and outdoor living spaces.

The challenging site was exceptionally narrow, steeply sloped, and underlain by sandy soils. To maximize space and provide structural stability, poured concrete retaining walls were used in place of traditional retaining wall systems, serving both structural and landscape functions. Careful regrading created accessible circulation from the side yard to the upper deck while reclaiming previously unusable terrain.

An accessible deck provides space for grilling and gathering while overlooking a cascading koi pond tucked into the hillside. Added later in the design process, the pond was strategically positioned to help mask nearby freeway noise while creating a tranquil focal point from both the deck and porch. Beneath the porch, a formerly unused area became a walk-out patio from the basement with a hot tub and lounge seating. Every square foot was intentionally designed, transforming a modest backyard into a functional, multi-level retreat for every season.
