Behind the Design

Design Notes

Before

A quiet ask for a pizza oven, on a property that had grown to two adjoining lots — one already built out, the other still waiting for an idea.

The Idea

The conversation grew from an oven into an infinity-edge pool aimed at the lake beyond it, a stone cabana with a full outdoor kitchen, and a plan to knit both lots into one backyard — down to filing an easement so a single driveway could serve them both.

After

He never did get that pizza oven. Instead: a 280-degree view of Lake Minnetonka framed by an infinity pool, a cabana built for hosting, and a backyard he returns to every summer to gather friends and family.

The Brief

—A simple request for a pizza oven that grew into a full backyard reinvention
—A way to unite two adjoining lots into one cohesive outdoor living space
—An infinity-edge pool that visually extends into Lake Minnetonka
—A stone cabana with a full outdoor kitchen for entertaining
—Fold an existing hot tub into the new design rather than replace it

Materials & Craft

An infinity edge aimed at the lake

The pool’s edge was engineered to disappear into the property’s 280-degree Lake Minnetonka view, turning the whole backyard into one continuous sightline.

A cabana instead of a pizza oven

The original ask grew into a full stone cabana with a complete outdoor kitchen, fire pits, and a 65-foot flagpole — built for entertaining, not just grilling.

Two lots, one easement

Because the adjoining lots couldn’t be legally combined for code reasons, the plan instead filed an easement so one shared driveway could serve both properties — solving the site logistics the whole design depended on.
