Outdoor View

by

The couple loved their backyard pool but hated everything around it. They dreamed of a full-featured oasis where their teenage daughter would choose to hang with friends and they could comfortably relax and entertain while enjoying the gorgeous sunsets from high above the lake. The catch was that the new design had to incorporate the existing deck structure and bulbous concrete pool deck.
The designer and contractor responded beautifully by tucking an outdoor kitchen/bar under the new porch and enhancing the poolscapefeatures, plantings and paving.

FUNCTIONALITY

  • We created more functional space around the pool-scape by adding a dry, outdoor kitchen/bar under the deck featuring a finished ceiling, grill, fridge and fire table.

  • The short-standing copper roof controls sun and keeps the kitchen/bar area dry.

  • A limestone boulder bump-out and wrought iron railing creates space for
a wood-burning fire circle with a stunning view of the lake below.

  • The new, sunken hot tub features removable maintenance panels and integral vault drainage.

  • Clay pavers alongside the kitchen serves as bar seating, but also allows for tractor access to the storage room.

  • The outdoor kitchen is wired for music, perfect for entertaining!

AESTHETICS

  • The pool area is now surrounded by raised fire pit, sunken hot tub and a kitchen bar that are all beautifully integrated with stone accent paving and potted palm trees.

  • A white-washed, cedar, tongue and groove ceiling in the outdoor kitchen reflects light to brighten the environment.

  • Lit fountains in urns, rope lighting and handsome wall sconces illuminate the outdoor living space in style.

  • Curved, wrought iron railings with brass collars, similar to the porch rail, replaces a straight hedgerow at the pool and enhances the view of the pond from the fire circle.

  • A sunken hot tub with stone surround replaces the teen’s outgrown trampoline. It offers a commanding view of the pool and pond, with quick access from the basement changing room.

  • Italian style gardens and antique finished, bubbling, stylized urns complete the homeowners desire to enhance the rustic, Tuscan aesthetic of the home’s interior.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

The careful balance of accent paving, stonework patterns and materials help to integrate the original pool deck for these conservation-minded clients who insisted it remain. The design includes travertine, bluestone flagging, a tumbled bluestone border, clay pavers and limestone boulders.

INNOVATION

  • An artistic use of paving around the original concrete pool deck and under-deck patio integrates the outdoor kitchen and pool-scape elements to perfect harmony.

  • A short-shed roof on brackets shelters the outdoor kitchen and bar, protecting the area from the elements, but still enhancing the outdoor living space.

  • When budget limitations precluded the broad terrace, the designer responded with a smaller fire-circle bump-out.
