The main level of this home has a beautiful wood-panel pub that led to a deck that was barely big enough for a grill. The clients wanted to open the room to a much more substantial deck to accommodate larger gatherings and integrate the indoor and outdoor living spaces while preserving privacy from the neighbors.
The new space needed to offer relief from evening insects and untimely showers, but also extend the outdoor season and add direct access to the yard. The roof line was low and the side yard setback restrictions dictated that the new structure could not extend beyond the side of the garage.
So, senior designer Heather Sweeney created a complete solution with a tall, mechanically-louvered pergola, disappearing screens, a line-of-sight fireplace wall, glass bifold doors and an open deck that wraps around the back of the house. While it extends the pub’s black and brown tones, the project achieved the clean contemporary look the clients desired.

FUNCTIONALITY

  • The versatile StruXure mechanical louvers and Phantom screens can be closed to keep rain and bugs out but are oriented to permit the maximum amount of natural light into the pub.

  • The large, partially covered deck creates direct main level access to the putting green, driveway and the new fire pit patio below.

  • The outdoor room doubles the size of the pub room for large group entertaining.

  • Powerful, Bromic heaters and the gas fireplace extend the outdoor season and keep guests comfortable on cool evenings.

  • The fireplace wall ensures privacy from the neighbors and also serves as a contemporary focal point.

AESTHETICS

  • The StruXure pergola and privacy wall deliver the desired contemporary element to the otherwise traditional home while extending the pub’s brown and black tones outdoors.

  • Premium Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) decking was installed with hidden fasteners to reinforce the pub’s wood theme.

  • The black cable railing and privacy wall with stainless steel horizontal strips and tile fireplace surround provide a contemporary touch.

  • The big bifold doors fold away to integrate the pub and the outdoor room.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

  • The entire pergola frame was built with structural steel posts and beams for superior wind resistance.

  • The deck and pergola posts have a classic wood architectural wrap that conceals water management and wiring systems.

INNOVATION/CHALLENGES

  • The designer incorporated stone steps and a walkway because the sideyard setback restrictions would not allow footings beyond the garage.

  • The door and roof line made it impossible to position the pergola below, so the designer raised it above the roofline to create a taller, more open space.

  • Mechanical louvers and walls provides either an open air or sheltered environment. (StruXure pergola, Phantom Screens and Bromic heaters).

  • The deck posts are supported by helical piers.

This project has quickly become one of our favorites and it even got recognized as Best in Show in the 2020 National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Contractor of the Year awards! See more of how this space transformed in the link below!
