Lenten roses (Helleborus) are becoming more popular in Minnesota because of their precocious spring bloom and lustrous evergreen foliage. Many cultivars have deep burgundy flowers that are stunning up close but hard to appreciate from a distance. That’s the beauty of “Spanish Flare” which produces masses of heavy 2-3″ blooms on a 20″ plant. The petals are a silky, buttery yellow and the stamen cluster is surrounded by a splash of deep burgundy, a truly stunning combination. Perfect in the lightly shaded woodland garden, this hellebore just gets better with age.
