In this transformative backyard design, we reimagined the space to elevate both relaxation and functionality. The new, larger pool is now perfectly centered on the upper deck, and a hot tub has been integrated into the lower deck, taking place of a former staircase.
To maximize seating and flow, we relocated the second flight of stairs, opening the area for additional seating, and a large luxurious bed swing on the lower-level deck now offers a serene spot for relaxation and views of the pool.
The outdoor kitchen is a true masterpiece, designed for entertaining with a grand variety of cooking appliances and stone finishes. The landscaping around the pool has been improved, softening the transition between all the areas.

Design Notes
Before
A backyard the family never quite knew how to use: awkward space under the deck, natural stone patios that shifted and heaved with the seasons, and a pool that felt too small for the way they wanted to live.
The Idea
Center everything. A new 20-by-42-foot pool lands perfectly on the axis of the curved upper deck, a hot tub takes the place of a former staircase, and the dead zone in front of the fireplace becomes a full outdoor kitchen with a coffered beadboard ceiling floating beneath the deck.
After
Three cooking surfaces vent invisibly behind board-and-batten, book-matched marble climbs the backsplash in one seamless sheet, and a bed swing sways on the lower deck with a straight view of the water. Even the old pool’s bluestone coping lives on — reborn as trim at the column bases.

The kitchen under the deck
An awkward seating area in front of the fireplace became a full kitchen and bar: gas grill, flat top, and side burner with hidden vent hoods, two fridges, a pot-filler, and a counter-height bar top facing the pool.

A ceiling brought down to earth
The 13-foot void beneath the deck felt cavernous — a custom coffered beadboard ceiling brings the scale down and carries new lighting without touching the decking system above.

The hot tub trade
Two staircases became one, and the freed corner of the upper deck became a circular hot tub wrapped in a curved stone wall and wood decking, with a hanging swing beside it.

Old stone, new job
The original pool’s bluestone coping was salvaged and reused as kickboard trim at the deck column bases — history folded into the new build.
The hard part
City zoning demanded extensive water mitigation and capped hardcover — the design squeaked under the maximum by three-tenths of a percent. Then saturated soils forced helical piers down thirty feet to carry the pool footing, and rotting cladding on the existing structures had to be rebuilt in composite before anything could shine.
