Who says we can’t have a little west coast Hollywood glam in Minnesota? (Writer’s Note: Please don’t answer that if you’re going to say, ‘me!’) When we think of luxury, we instantly remember this rooftop moment in Minneapolis. Let’s take a moment out of our day to revel in what Minnesota has to offer regarding rooftop luxury views.
There is no doubt, upon first glance, this place is special. The rooftop, like a hopeful beacon, points directly at the Minneapolis skyline. At the same time, the space feels hidden by lush trees and stunning, rounded architecture. The space has a modern vibe, accessorized with clean white furniture and edgy, zebra accents. While the skyline peeks over the trees, for the most part, the space feels chic-treehouse private. Ideal for a cocktail party or a long afternoon reading a book in the sun.
Need some luxury remodeling ideas? Well, you’ve come to the right rooftop party corner of the internet. It’s symmetric. It’s simple. The landscaping surrounding the space is well lit and lush. Read about the experience and design process below.

ENHANCE OUTDOOR SPACE

The homeowners main goal was to turn the rooftop space into an outdoor space they could enjoy. The townhouse had minimal outdoor opportunities (hello, city life), so, this particular rooftop option had to be modern, effortless to maintain and easy to clean/use. The solution? Porcelain tiles. The exterior, covered in them, is almost indestructible. They also have a great slip coefficient and require very little for cleaning. Voila!

CONSIDER PORCELAIN’S PRACTICAL BEAUTY (AND GRIT)

When you consider creating a space, the material is a huge part of tying together the theme. Since this patio’s theme was “modern glory” porcelain makes up almost the entire space (specifically including the flooring). A gas line was added for a future fire pit. The porcelain in this space, a special order from Italy, looks a lot like concrete making the space appear very functional and chic at the same time. Since there was no machine access to the site, and this was a 50’ high rooftop, each piece of material had to be hauled up multiple flights of stairs one box at a time. Totally worth it!

CONSIDER MODERN DESIGN

The core inspiration for the project was: modern design. For reference, modern design combines industrial chic and mid-century modern by blending certain characteristics in a streamlined manner. On this patio, the porcelain, ceramic-looking, tiles reflects an industrial look while the white accents and simple lines tie it all together. Boom! The space looks clean and starkly minimal.

GET TECHNICAL

Cool fact: the tiles are installed on adjustable pedestals placed at every corner of every piece (Writer’s Note: that’s a lot of pedestals!). The pedestals are placed on top of the rubber membrane that protects the roof from excess water. For effortless installation, each pedestal can be individually adjusted to account for the different height of the door and siding. Ahh, the things you don’t think about when it comes to beautiful design.

QUICK TIPS TO MODERNIZE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE:

  • Buy furniture that has solid colors and straight lines to contrast with the organic shapes and nature surrounding the space.

  • Add geometric shapes like stone pillars or chunks of granite to add dimension if your space is surrounded by rounded vegetation or curvaceous gardens.

  • Add a focal installation, like a fire feature or pergola to add extra interest.
