Mudrooms are a funny part of the house. They’re oftentimes the first place that welcomes you into your home after a long day at work and they’re the last place you see before you leave. So, they should serve some kind of purpose and they should also give you peace of mind! Imagine seeing an absolute atrocity of a mess every time you close the door, that can’t be good for your health.
Anyway, that’s why we’ve put together a list of ways to organize and mudroom must-haves so your entry and exit space can be peaceful and satisfying.
HOOKS ARE BETTER THAN HANGERS
When you’re on the run, hangers can become a trap (and they’re messy looking). Hooks can hold bulky coats and they’re convenient to throw a winter jacket on when you breeze home from work. Hangers also look chic and lovely in an open closet concept.
DRESSERS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND!
Repurposing a dresser is a great way to build some creative extra space for your mudroom. Bust out the bottom two drawers and fill with cute storage boxes or buckets to keep gloves and other items. The greatest hack is to always assume you NEVER have enough storage in your mudroom space. The more storage you build, the less clutter you’ll have.
Quick Tip: If you have kids in the family, always design with those kiddos in mind. This dresser may be great for toy storage for the quick-moving young ones.
MAKE A CUTE KEYHOLDER
These are super easy to make, too. Use an old frame with a hook in the center, or use vintage drawer hooks.
BUILD AN OPEN BENCH CONCEPT
A good mudroom set up is always about functionality and flow. Open benches built into a spacious concept closet are great aesthetically as well. Use the space below the bench to add baskets or shoe mats.
BOOK SHELVES MAKE GREAT LOCKERS FOR THE KIDS
Take a few shelves out of a bookshelf you love and drill in some hooks to have organized lockers for the kiddos. Quick tip: Make sure the bookshelf you use is from the same line as a bench or smaller table if you’re using it in your mudroom. If you keep the same theme throughout the space (i.e. classic, rustic, or modern) it won’t look mismatched and silly when you put it all together.
DON’T FORGET TO INCORPORATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE!
Do you love the shabby chic look? A more modern feel? Classic and traditional? Be sure to keep that in mind when adding elements to your mudroom space. The mudroom should be a functional space, but it should have a personal touch as well. Consider adding in fun pillows, bench accessories, and art to the space that reflects what you love about your home. Don’t be afraid to get creative, either.
CREATE A ROOM THAT FLOWS
The key to this is all about bringing in elements from the outside that flow into the indoors. For example, a stone floor in a mudroom is a great touch. Mudrooms are the transition from the outdoors to the indoors, so materials should function both visually and based on the overall design and landscape of the home. Great design is all about bringing things together!
A key thing to remember is that less is always more (except when it comes to storage space). And have fun with it. It’s a functional space, but it doesn’t need to be serious. If you need more design tips, be sure to schedule an appointment with us today!
