Ahhh, the sweet smell of competition and a little bug spray. Nothing says summer quite like the shuffled enjoyment of putting together backyard sports games with neighbors and friends. While there is a little summer left and a lot of fall, we’d love to see how you can best use your beautiful yard to get out and play! Psst…fall also means less mosquitos so let’s get out the bocce ball and get competitive! Your kids didn’t name you “Mr. King of Funtown” for nothing.
Now, let’s get dreamy. Home design doesn’t only need to be connected to the inside of the house. You were a kid once – and adulting might mean creating the space for your kids (and you!) that inspires you to get outside and play.
Here are some ideas we had that surely will bring a smile to your face.
1. BUILD AN IMAGINATIVE KID-CABIN
One that looks like it popped out of a fairytale! Now, we know this can be a giant undertaking and quite the Home Depot trip. However, it will be something your children remember forever. And probably the neighbor’s children, too. Once it’s finished add some whimsical touches like accent lighting (Christmas lights will do) and a little shrubbery.
2. FEATURE BOULDER ART
A great way to add an interactive space in your backyard is by adding giant boulders the kiddies can draw on with chalk (or maybe, if you’re feeling wild, paint on). Being artful is all about interacting with nature – and what better way to do so!?
3. ADD A SMALLER, FUNCTIONAL COURT
Now, this doesn’t need to get “over the top.” All you need is a flat space in your yard to cover with concrete and utilize as a play court. If you hide the space amongst some trees and perhaps by a fire pit, it looks purposeful and natural. Adults can also hang by the kids and have a cocktail or cold brew while watching them play. Quick tip: add some cozy patio seating to turn the court space into a lounge area for game viewing.
4. BRING OUT THE BIG SWING
Breezy swings may be the epitome of every childhood, so why not get some quality rope, a wooden slab and throw a little swing together. If you have a giant, strong oak – hang it from there. Quick tip: Decorating the leaves with lights can add to the magical ambiance.
5. DRIVING RANGE, ANYONE?
Who says you can’t have a driving range in your backyard? Of course, this would take a special backyard (one that is big enough and not facing a road where you’re going to blast some balls into someone’s windshield). However, if you have the opportunity to create something of its kind, this element of play makes for a great family activity. Also, driving ranges for the kids don’t need to be large. They can be small enough to learn how to hit the ball! Quick tip: this doesn’t rule out putt putt. If you have a smaller space, create a small practice putt putt section in your yard.
6. CREATE A BOCCE BALL EXPERIENCE
Bocce ball is a true summer classic, and what better way to enjoy it than in a space dedicated to the craft. If you border the space with flat, limestone rocks, they act as great beer tables for those playing. If you set up some stylish lounge chairs (something like this) at the end of the bocce ball court, onlookers can enjoy the show as well!
7. RELAX IN A READING-SWING-NOOK
Okay, we may have made up “reading-swing-nook” but you catch our blissful drift. If you’re more of the relaxing kind, bring a cozy swing into the mix where the kids can read and you can sneak in a secret nap.
Now, it’s time to make more room for play. During these short and gorgeous summer months, we’re willing to do just about anything to get outside!
