The key to quality ambiance in any piece of home design is always the lighting. Trust me, good lighting sets the mood in more than just romantic situations (wink, wink). I learned that from my mom. She said, “beautiful design starts with good lighting. You don’t need to turn ALL the lights on at once.”
Any designer will agree; lights are magical. They create an idealistic idea of whimsy and wonder. If they are placed correctly, they can bring stunning shadows and emotional warmth to any space. Like any good design elements, they provide a context for people that have never been to your outdoor space before (light the way across an outdoor path, for example). Or, they act as an attention-worthy focal point of the design.

1. MAKE A STATEMENT

Gone are the days of simplicity. It’s time to make a statement! Big, bold, feature lights are very Vogue right now. Think illuminated globes and glow balls, chandeliers and novelty lighting (for a more conservative look). These are space conversation starters because they set the tone for space. And they are really, really fun to shop for. Read more about what’s new in outdoor lighting designs on Houzz.

Quick Idea: Look for a sconce that has rustic appeal. Any wall sconce with a cage adds a low-key vibe that packs a punch and brings the charm.

2. GOODBYE BORING, HELLO MOOD LIGHTING

White lighting is the new basic, and not in a good way. Color filters offer a new palette of colors that can actually affect our moods (blue is the most stress-free color). Whether you want to create a warm tone or cool tone in your yard, there are options out there. If you want to highlight a certain space in a yard, a different hue of lighting will highlight the space with a twist.

Quick Idea: The traditional outdoor lawn torch is a little outdated, but West Elm Modern Metal Garden Torch is a great update.

3. HAVE A LANTERN MOMENT

Bring back the classics! Lanterns are one of them, they are timeless. They match almost any look you’re going for and create a tasteful element of a dreamy space.

Quick Idea: If you’re nervous about lanterns, this Serena and Lily Outdoor Bell Pendant is a handsome alternative.

4. SPRINKLE IN THE HOLIDAYS YEAR-ROUND

Plantings and walkways deserve a little twinkle and they’re very “in” right now. They can accent features and add depth to your yard.

Quick Idea: Consider Terrain Stargazer Commercial Light String. Above an outdoor dining area, these lights add a beachy, tropical element to any moment.

5. LOVE THE PLANET

Environmentally friendly products are all the rage (and they should be). LED lighting (light-emitting diodes) are the ideal choice. They are incredibly energy-efficient and budget-friendly (i.e. they last forever). Solar-powered lights are another popular choice.

QUICK TIPS AND TAKEAWAYS:

  • Know the three types of lighting that should be relevant in your outdoor space: accent lighting, task lighting and ambient lighting. Task lighting makes things functional (pathway lighting, deck and security lights). Ambiance lighting is all about hanging post and wall lights (this type of lighting evokes emotion). Accent lighting is all in the spotlight.

  • Plan ahead: Take measurements so you know your lights aren’t going to be too large or tiny for space. For sizing help, lighting next to a door should be about ⅓ of the height of the door.

  • Use LEDs: They use far less energy and they’re almost maintenance-free.

  • For a quick update, use solar lighting: You should consider what the outdoors are going to look like while you’re standing inside your home.
