Winning isn’t everything, but it sure feels good when it comes. That may be why we are walking tall despite Minnesota’s late start spring. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has named Mom’s Design Build its 2018 National Contractor of the Year (CotY) in both residential and commercial categories.
The industry association recognized Mom’s Design Build for the best Exterior Residential Remodeling for an Inver Grove Heights porch addition. It also honored us for the best Commercial Specialty project for the entry landscape and observation deck at the amenities-rich Concierge Apartments in Richfield.
Judges evaluated projects based on aesthetic appeal, functionality, innovation, workmanship, and problem-solving. Most of all, it was about identifying and satisfying the client’s goals.
For the Exterior win, Senior Designer Becca Bastyr converted an open deck to an architecturally integrated three-season porch with a pool-level outdoor kitchen and lounge area below. Becca’s project beat regional finalists from Medford, NY, Fairfax, VA, Powell, OH and San Jose, CA.
Senior Designer Heather Grossman designed the award-winning apartments landscape. It combined lighting, hardscaping, lighting, plants and a multi-area, glass-rail deck complete with outdoor TV. Judges chose Heather’s design over an entry from Beavercreek, OH.
Mom’s Design Build co-owners Jim Sweeney and Craig Weckman said that, like all of our projects, the winning entries were a total team effort.
“It starts with trusting clients and talented designers collaborating long before the construction season begins. But it also takes crews of skilled craftsmen working long days to execute the plans,” Jim explained.
Jim, Becca, Heather and Interior Remodeling Director Karie Zemlicka attended the NARI Evening of Excellence on April 20 in Charlotte, SC, where the national winners were announced. Tom Sweeney of Content Craftsmen LLC created the winning award entries.
