National Contractor of the Year! It has a nice ring, especially when the bell sounds three times in the same evening. That’s precisely what happened this month when the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) honored Mom’s Design Build with the industry’s top 2017 award in three separate CotY categories. Mom’s was named National Contractor of the Year for Landscape Design/Outdoor Living over $60,000, Landscape Design/Outdoor Living under $60,000 and Residential Exteriors $100,000 to $200,000.
Mom’s has a long history of entering and winning many landscape architecture awards. But this was special, even for us. NARI is the largest professional organization of remodeling industry professionals in the United States. This year, member companies such as Mom’s from across the country submitted their best 172 projects for national consideration. With three wins in as many submissions, Mom’s earned more national titles than any other company here in Minnesota or anywhere throughout the United States. The same three Mom’s projects swept the North Central regional CotY competitions in January and these and one other project won Minnesota CotY awards last November.
Out of state judges were not told who submitted each project. They evaluated entries solely on the ability of the presentations to demonstrate the projects met clients’ needs, improved aesthetics and functionality, and demonstrated innovation, craftsmanship and degree of difficulty.
NARI RECOGNIZES WAYZATA, EDEN PRAIRIE, LAKE ELMO PROJECTS
NARI recognized Mom’s projects in Eden Prairie, Wayzata and Lake Elmo this year. The Lake Elmo project was at the home of the Beckens. It featured a heated pergola patio room with motorized roof louvers and clear walls that opened and closed with the press of a button. The Wayzata entry was the home of the Glads. This time, Mom’s transformed an overgrown front landscape into a dramatic courtyard with colorful herringbone paving, lighted fountain, and an abundance of the owner’s favorite plants. Meanwhile, the O’Brien’s Eden Prairie landscape design utilized decorative metal panels, a custom gate, and a freestanding masonry fireplace flanked by living walls to create a stunningly beautiful environment and privacy from the street.
“We enter these award competitions to recognize our talented and hard working designers and crews,” said Mom’s founder Jim Sweeney. “It also gives our fantastic clients official bragging rights because their goals and tastes are what inspire our best work. Congratulation to Senior Designer Heather Grossmann, who designed the Becken project, and to Senior Designer Becca Bastyr, who designed the O’Brien and Glad projects.”
