There can be a letdown in spring after the glorious clouds of the crabapple blooms have faded. Do not despair though; just as French, Korean, and Japanese lilacs extend lilac season, “Prairie Rose” extends crabapple season by blooming substantially later than other crabs. As an added bonus, the blooms are laden with strong, heavenly fragrance. Bred from the native Malus ioensis, “Prairie Rose” has a more open habit than most crabapples and sports silvery grey bark on a 15′ by 15′ tree. It is not resistant to apple scab so avoid wet, crowded, or shady conditions.
