Several years ago my wife’s childhood Radio Flyer wagon had been outgrown by our kids, but it still possessed sentimental value. Confronted with what to do with it, I had an idea: why not convert it into a portable salad bar? After drilling a few drainage holes, laying in a small sheet of landscape fabric, and filling the wagon with potting soil, the plan was in motion! A few weeks after sowing a salad mix, we had spring greens ready for harvest/thinning. As the weather warmed and a couple more weeks went by, we had this amazing crop of mature greens:
There was something about the salad wagon’s playful embrace of practicality and whimsy that charmed visitors and made that most basic dish, the salad, a lasting memory.
