CREATE AN APPEALING ENTRYWAY
One of our favorite ways to add curb appeal is to simply place well designed containers near your front entry. Planting spring containers can bring a wonderful pop of color to landscapes that have been sitting dormant for the winter season. Knowing which plants will work in our cooler Minnesota spring climate can offer numerous options for designing unique containers to kick off the growing season. In any container, there will be the thrills, fills, and spills.
Thrills are the center of attention in a design and tend to be the tallest plant in the container. Thrill plants for spring will be bulbs such as tulips and daffodils and decorations such as pussy willow, curly willow and birch branches. Fills will be in the middle of a design and will add volume to a container. Fill plants include hyacinth, cold-weather perennials (heuchera, Hosta, primrose, Lenten rose, columbine, etc.), pansies, viola, marigold, fern and oxalis. These filler plants will bring wonderful color and texture. The spillers hang down the sides of the container to add another layer of color and texture. These plants include English ivy, torenia, lobelia, petunia (wave and supertunia varieties), million bells and trailing snapdragons. Other miscellaneous plants such as cold-weather vegetables and herbs (kale, lettuce, parsley, etc.) and Scottish moss can offer a dramatic surprise to a container’s design.
