Alright, it’s time to declutter. Specifically, in your kitchen and living room space.
We’re sure both of these spots the most popular areas you spend the most quality time in: cooking, conversing, playing board games, watching reruns of Survivor, midnight snacking or all of the above. The kitchen is the heart of the home, the center of every big emotion and family bonding moment. The living room is a space built for relaxing; spreading out. With that, they can also become a space of distractions and busy vibes. Suddenly, the kid’s homework is sprawled all over tables. Crafts, magazines and books take up half the space in the living room. The kitchen has a plethora of cutting boards and containers strewn about the counter space. Life gets in the way of space, sometimes, and that overwhelming feeling takes over.
However, according to Psychology Today, clutter can cause stress. Excessive visual stimuli can easily fog our mind and flag our brains that the work is never done which sparks feelings of guilt and anxiety.
We don’t think you’re a hoarder. But, there is no place for anxious thoughts in your home. And solutions for the clutter madness happen in our homes quite naturally. And it’s AMAZING what a little clutter-clean-up can do. Now is the time to get rid of the items that can easily pile up on counters and get your mind right.
You should feel good about your living space, so here are some simple tweaks to make you and your home feel so fresh and so clean!

1. BUY A BIGGER COFFEE TABLE

For real! When it comes to making your space seem less cluttered, the bigger the better. It acts as an anchor for the room and creates the illusion that you have more space and less stuff.

2. CLEAR OFF TABLES AND COUNTERS

This is a simple little task that can be accomplished in under ten minutes. Anything on the tables and counter you don’t use – remove them. Organized cupboards and linen closets are a better space for a lot of these things. Here’s a little list of things that can be better organized or stored away:

Kitchen:
  • Coffee
  • Cutting boards
  • Dish soap
  • Sponges
  • Storage canisters
  • Paper Towel Holders
  • Jars of cookies or treats
Living Room:
  • Coasters
  • Magazines
  • Blankets
  • Remotes

3. FLOORS ARE SECRET HOMES FOR CLUTTER - PICK SOME THINGS UP

This sounds weird at first, but the floor is actually where a lot of that random clutter is hiding. Things simply tend to “pile up.” First, physically clean them. Wipe wood floors down with appropriate cleaner, vacuum the carpets and clean them up with lint rollers. Pick up any random baskets filled with pet toys, pillows and blankets and move them to closets or drawers. If there’s a small piece of furniture, like a day table or step-stool on the floor, move those too. The extra space will instantly appear.

4. DEEP CLEAN THE SINK AND ANY SHELVING

Sometimes, deep cleaning will do the trick. That means, getting down with a sponge and putting in work. Clear out shelves in the living room and the sink free of dishes and start scrubbing! It will help you purge a bit too and you’ll want to keep things clean for a while after that. (Writer’s Note: Simply writing about this makes me want to fill my sink with bubbles and go to town).

5. REARRANGE

A new perspective always provides a clearer space. Reimagine your kitchen and family room and see if there’s another way you can set up the space so it remains functional for your day-by-day. Arranging furniture is an art, so be mindful here. Sketch out a plan and pay attention to function. Draw it out! Start with the bigger furniture and work your way down. Choose a focal point, like a mantel or window or TV and arrange your furniture around that. Oh and don’t push your furniture up against walls! Despite what it seems, this extra space actually makes the room actually seem bigger.

6. GROUP THINGS TOGETHER IN DEFINED SPACES

If you do have things on your coffee table, work desk in your kitchen or dinner table – group things together in an organized, singular space. For example, buy a tray for the items in your family room that have to remain out and about (like a remote, candle, plant or book). That way, it doesn’t look like clutter anymore, it looks intentionally styled.

7. GET RID OF OR CONCEAL WIRES AND PLUGS

Pesky, exposed wires really set the clutter alarm. You can buy wire boxes online or cord covers that look clean and chic to replace those flimsy wires. Find some more ideas about cord management here.
