Ahhh, autumn; we can feel it in our bones. The air has lightened up. You’re craving crisp, cold apple cider again. The days briskly shorten themselves. The sound of football in the background sweetens Sunday evenings. Best of all? The mums are back! Flower stores are brightened with bold yellows and oranges. The plants are changing, becoming yellow. White, tiny pumpkins pop up everywhere. It’s time to change those planters out for fall. So, we thought it would be fun to find some fall planter inspiration and give you tips on how to make the perfect fall statement. Let’s dig in!

1. The first thing you will have to do is tame down your summer planters, and we all know how overgrown and messy those can get. So, start with some trimming and keep the plants intact that still look healthy.

2. To keep your planter looking really good, consider this tip. You should have tall, bushy, and spiller plants in your planter at all times; we call this the thrills, fills and spills!

This will add dimension, texture and variety to the overall look. Purple fountain grass is a great option for a tall/thrill plant. The Coleus ‘Chocolate Drop’ makes for a great bushy/fill plant. And sweet potato vines are quality spillers/spills. And, they’re really pretty.

3. Gourds, indian corn and artificial berries are your friends! These are great add-ons if you’re feeling like there’s extra space in your planter that needs attention.

4. Consider moving some flowers from your gardens into your planter. This adds some thickness to whatever you removed that had died out from the summertime.

5. When you’re shopping at the flower store, find summer plants that are on sale in fall colors! Pansies are a great option here, since you can find some beautiful yellow and orange ones; pansies are hardy for those colder autumn nights.

6. If you’re adding some “key” fall plants to your summer planters, raspberry colored mums add a great pop of autumn tone paired with a green and purple ornamental cabbage.

7. Surround the base of your planters with heirloom pumpkins and a series of gourds to add more dimension to the overall planter space and ambiance.

8. Hardy herbs are a great option, beyond a foliage plant, that will spruce up space in a planter, taking it from summer briskly to fall. They also can withstand those cold fall nights.

9. Don’t skimp on it! Fill up your fall planter keeping plants in close proximity to one another. They only get about three months to bloom and have to stay warm somehow.

10. For color, you have a few variations you can choose from. Firstly, you can stick to a one or two color arrangement. Or, you can go full out fiesta theme with reds, oranges, yellows, purples and more! No holding back. It is completely based on your preference!

11. Birch branches and bamboo stakes are great options to add as an accent in your planter.

12. Old crockery from a thrift store makes for great fall planters or table settings. Pumpkins at their base add a pop of color and texture.

13. Get creative with what you plant in! Put flowers in a wheelbarrow or tin bucket for example.
