In the beginning of the pandemic, we were all sort of “throwing together” an at-home workspace. We substituted used old dining room chairs for desk chairs. We worked from the comfort of our couch. We used our bedrooms as conference rooms and couldn’t find anywhere to stack all of our planners and invoices. We quickly realized that set-up wasn’t going to cut it (our backs started hurting, clutter was everywhere and the energy in the room was feeling chaotic). Also, like most of us, you may have had a minor pivot where you suddenly wanted to sell everything in your home. Why? Because home quickly turned into a “working space” rather than a “living space.”
But, surprise! You can do both! If your at-home workspace needs an upgrade, or if you’re in the process of renovating, we have some tips just for you. Creating the perfect work space at home can be a big project but it can also be (gasp) therapeutic.
To get started, here’s a quick list of items you’ll need. We figured we’d treat this post a little like a grocery list for a recipe. Because, what would we do without a checklist nowadays?

ITEM CHECKLIST:

  • A modern and chic desk lamp. We love all of these super chic designer options from Gantri. We’re thinking desk with no clutter, desk with no clutter, desk with…well you get the point.

  • A happy lamp (of course!). Here’s a favorite

  • A wider desk with some appeal (like curved edges or a calming aesthetic).

  • To add some ambiance, a candle.

  • Local florals with greens or a healthy houseplant to brighten the space.

  • Trays and storage for smaller items (like glasses and pens). We love all of these solid ash wood composed trays by Dims.

Note: find items that always, always, always bring you joy and create a relaxing environment for you. Your workspace should be a place you can recharge, as equally as you practice productiveness and creativity. Let’s get started!

DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION TIPS:

1. FIRST, CONSIDER WHAT YOU’LL BE USING THE WORKSPACE FOR

2. GET RID OF CLUTTER

Do you really need all of those extra frames at your desk? Or the giant mug with miscellaneous pens and pencils. Ideally, not really. You can minimize a lot of your items to minimize stress. Buy natural looking trays to hold your glasses and pens. A cluster of frames belong in the living space. Decorate with a bundle of greens or flowers instead.

3. PICK A STYLE AND A LOCATION (OH, AND ENSURE THE WIFI IS STRONG)

Right away, define in your mind if you want a lot of boldness and color or chic, modern simplicity. What’s your working style like? Do you like to feel inspired? Or do you like to have a clean slate? Once you have an aesthetic nailed down, pick the best spot in your home to build the space. If you want temporary boldness, try temporary peel and stick wallpaper. Make sure your workspace has good natural light and keeps you away from daily home distractions (as much as possible).

4. MAKE THE LIGHTING WORK FOR YOU

Find a desk lamp to supplement overhead lighting and make sure your space has a lot of natural light coming in, especially if you’re staring at a computer screen all day. In fact, place your desk or main workspace right next to the window. Happy lamps do the trick, especially on Mondays. A tall floor lamp and warm task lighting keep the room looking updated and cozy.

5. DECORATIONS SHOULD BE SIMPLE AND CALMING

You can always go bold, but a good workspace, that requires a lot of Zoom calls, should have a simple background for video. Make sure you have an open wall behind you and clear any storage. Decorations should definitely reel in the calming vibes, though. Buy a plant or oil diffuser to have nearby. Set a small Bluetooth speaker next to you and play soft background noise or calming music. If you don’t have a space with a simple backdrop, don’t fret, you can simply stylize your space with some of your favorite trinkets; this is also a great conversation starter via video chat!

6. A COMFORTABLE CHAIR IS KEY

You’re sitting all day long (unless you have a standing desk, of course). Either way, invest in a nice ergonomic chair! Add a back pillow for lumbar support in the interim.
