February 14th has come and gone. Your one chance at romance for the year is over. Or is it? At Mom’s we believe romance can be infused into any day and any space… Here’s a few tips and tricks on making it happen.

1. PRIVACY IS KEY

When designing romantic nooks or outdoor kissing rooms, privacy is always a priority. Creating a space shielded from the potential onlooking of neighbors is essential. We often incorporate evergreen hedges or fences into landscape designs to do just that. Imagine feeling so secluded in a backyard you could be comfortable in your underwear!

2. USE FLOWERS TO ENTICE THE SENSES

Adding a romantic backdrop of fragrant climbing flowers to a fence or pergola can provide a surround of delightful smell and soft color. We think the best ones to use are jasmine, roses, blue moon wisteria, honeysuckle, and clematis. Don’t just take it from your landscaper though—a study conducted by a team of psychologists in France found that the site of flowers made women significantly more receptive to romantic gestures, even when the flowers were in the background rather than presented as a gift!

3. IT’S ALL IN THE LIGHT

Dim the harsh white lights and add a magical warm glow with candlelight or a crackling fire place. A simple small flame cutting through the darkness will eliminate the noise of your surroundings and allow you to focus and accentuate what’s important. Candlelight has a remarkable way of creating a flattering glow that is sure to make your partner look and feel amazing.

4. ADD SOFT, SENSUOUS FABRICS.

Adding pillows and blankets to a seating area—especially in an outdoor space—will bring a surprising and comforting contrast to the textured surroundings, creating an oasis of warmth and comfort to a bench, picnic area, outdoor bed, or swing.

5. BE PRESENT.

The most important thing about romance isn’t the space you’re in, it’s the power of human connection. As much as you can, remove distractions—put down your phone, turn off the screens, send the kids to grandma’s—and turn into your partner. Hold eye contact or a kiss for more than 12 seconds & you may be surprised with the results!
