Are you thinking about renovating your space? That’s so exciting! And, at the same time, there’s a lot to consider. Is your space ready for an entirely new (gut out the entire room) project? Or, are you looking for a more simplified refresh? We put together a little blog post to help you decipher which option may be best for you, answer some questions, and give options for the renovation process.
First off, renovation can be a scary word. If interior decorating were a relationship, a renovation would be the whole diamond ring. But, depending on budget and the current state of your home upgrades, it doesn’t have to be the whole kit and caboodle. If you don’t want to tackle an entire remodel, a refresh could be a solid, budget friendly option in the interim.

YOU MAY WANT TO REFRESH IF…

  • You love the size and structural layout of your home (the home has good bones, and you’re happy with the space).

  • You’re dissatisfied with simply the general aesthetic of your home and need a little upgrade.

  • If you don’t want to (completely) break the bank or you’re on a tighter budget.

  • The home’s infrastructure is still in good shape.

  • Simple custom home changes like newly painted cabinets, upgraded cabinet knobs, updating light fixtures and replacing backsplashes sound most appealing to you.

YOU MAY WANT TO REMODEL IF…

  • You think your space is non-functional in its current layout (you want to move things around like appliances, cabinets or architectural features.

  • Structural issues, like a water leak, need to be addressed within the home.

  • The need to relocate space in your house, or open the space up entirely.

In summary, a refresh satisfies those “aesthetic” changes and a remodel satisfies “functional” changes. So, what steps do you take for both preferences? We’ve got you covered there, too.
Firstly, if you want to upgrade your home, there are many ways you can tackle it. If you want to open your home up to more space, buy mirrors placed opposite windows and get rid of bigger, bulkier furniture. Brighten up your space with upgraded lighting. Bright lights can modernize a space quickly and it’s a way cheaper option than knocking out an entire wall of windows (for now, anyway). Also, lighting is a great way to go a little “beyond your comfort zone” and have some fun. Light fixtures are brilliant elements in any room. If those upgrades aren’t your cup of home design tea, update drawer pulls and handles to spice up the appearance of cabinetry in your home.
Quick tip: build a list of these things and try to tackle one per month. It’s budget friendly and keeps you busy all summer long!
I also put together a checklist of upgrades you can print off at your own convenience!

REFRESH CHECKLIST:

  • Paint cabinets.

  • Update drawer pulls and handles (once paint is dry, of course).

  • Upgrade light fixtures like LED lighting to make your home more energy effecient.

  • Dress windows with something new like stylish window panels.

  • Visit your local greenhouse and add a few floral shrubs or window boxes outdoors.

  • Add an easy to install and remove wallpaper.

  • Add built-in shelving.

I love a good checklist, that’s for sure. Obviously, don’t feel the pressure to get all of this done throughout the summer. This list can live on or be changed to suit your personal needs.
Secondarily, if you’re looking to dive into a full remodel, there are a lot of steps to take to make the space worth it in the end. And, you guessed it, I put together a checklist.

REMODEL CHECKLIST:

  • Decipher where you want to start. The kitchen? The family room? The bathroom? The first room you remodel should offer you the most happiness. Where do you spend the most time?

  • Once you’ve picked the space, come up with a look you love and do the research. Pinterest and Houzz are great sources to build your very own mood boards for contractors and designers. This should be a two week process so you can feel confident in your choice to move forward and make changes if need be.

  • Work with a financial planner to work out your budget. If it helps, work with a realtor as well to figure out what remodeled homes in your area are selling for. That way, you can figure out how much you want to spend to make an impact. The rule here is, don’t invest in more than you can get back.

  • Make a list of priorities and must-have features for your renovation. This will help your designer decipher what’s most important to you and it will help you get you what you want in the long run.

  • If you’re bumping out a room to make more space in your home, make sure to check in on your town’s zoning laws first. Of course, this is only precautionary, but being over prepared is better than under.

  • Find the right contractor. The Mom’s Design Build team believes in quality, communication and care.
