Home design has become a big part of our lives. It is the space we gather. The space we rest. And, most importantly, the space that truly defines our inner selves. But, funny enough, interior decorating isn’t the first thing we think about regarding our homes, especially when we think of outdoor spaces. Why? It’s tough to understand how we want to live outside. The outdoors don’t have structure and their openness can be intimidating. So, we wanted to explore the true art of inclusive gathering spaces outdoors – and how you can design them to create comfortable outdoor spaces for all.
To start, we thought this sentence explains perfectly the crucial aspect of creating spaces that are premeditated: Intentional outdoor structures that allow openness and the ability to transform a space are crucial elements of home design. Truly, if you Google the word “intentional” among many synonyms that pop up are: designful and designed. That’s no coincidence! Designing with intention maximizes a space.
As you begin to think about how you want to design the outside space of your new house (or the home you’ve had for years and years to come) use these tips to consider the true intention behind how you want to develop the design.
INCLUDE THE INDOORS, OUTDOORS
When we think about bringing intention into spaces, a lot of that intention comes from the heart. So, it’s crucial to create a sense of flow from your indoor space, right into your outdoor space. The blending of indoor and outdoor living goes both ways. Natural materials indoors from throw pillows and cozy accessories outdoors… one supports the other.
Quick home design tip: Large sliding glass doors are seamless interior decorating additions that create flow from the indoors out. Big windows, natural light, all these things make the transition to walking outdoors feel like another room in the house.
CONSIDER MATERIALS (YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED)
Big slabs of concrete are “out.” Instead, recycled glass, stone and wood are in. Remember, recent years have proven that the materials used outdoors are becoming a little closer to what’s happening inside the home.
Quick home design tip: Nearly invisible wire railings are becoming all the rage to create an illusion of a more open deck or area. So, if you’re thinking of a quick home remodeling idea, wire railings are the “voila”! There are also beautiful options for glass railing which offer unobstructed views and aesthetic appeal.
SAY HELLO TO THE AL FRESCO KITCHEN
Designing with intention has become practical. If you cook a lot in the summer, consider bringing the show outdoors. Today’s outdoor kitchens have all the things: sinks, ovens, ice makers, dishware, utensils, trash bins, fireplaces and more. Ask yourself: how do you intend to truly enjoy and utilize the space? They are becoming more versatile every day.
Quick home design tip: Make sure all of your items that you’ll be using outdoors are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them!
ADD A SPLASH OF COLOR, WITH A TWIST
Color blocking, folks! It’s all the rage and a perfect way to point eyes towards a focal point in a room. It’s also a very effective way to shake up dull exteriors and liven up a boring doors or siding. Urban, meet suburban.
Quick home design tip: Paint an accent wall, some pots, hanging artwork trellises, patio furniture bright colors to add this color pop. And don’t shy away from being bold!
REFLECT THE TRUE CHARACTER OF THE HOME
A great way to build authenticity and intention in your outdoor space is often through landscaping and hardscaping. Pull specific design elements or items from inside your home that can be supported within the outdoor space: a favorite chair, a type of flower you love – the options are endless (and kind of wonderful).

FLIRT WITH THE OUTDOOR FABRIC REVOLUTION
Outdoor fabrics that are fade-resistant and waterproof are key here, especially so you can keep those bold colors and artistic designs running through your outdoor space.
Quick home design tip: Be intentional when you choose these fabrics, because it’s really nice to leave them out year-round (wink, wink).
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU (AND EVERYONE) REALLY NEEDS
Ask all the questions before designing your outdoor space with true intention. Do you need room for a dog? Do you want a kitchen garden? Do your kids need an active play space? How do you like to relax? These questions are fun to answer and will be a crucial portion of the design journey.
Quick home design tip: Your space is for you, but it’s for the people you surround yourself with, too. Ask the family how they would dream up the space. And write down your three “must-haves” before getting started with the design!
