As our national award-winning senior interior designer at Mom’s Design Build, Melissa, says, “Design trends are driven by people. Design, in general, is people-centric, and as designers, we must get to know them on a deeper level and ask a lot of questions to design a space that suits a client’s lifestyle.”

As we move through 2025, interior design is evolving in ways that seamlessly blend style, functionality, sustainability, and wellness. More than ever, our living spaces are a reflection of our lifestyle choices, influenced not only by practical needs but also by broader cultural shifts. One of the most intriguing dynamics shaping interior trends this year is the crossover between fashion and entertainment—an intersection that continues to seep into home design.

It’s no surprise that what we see on the runway and on-screen eventually finds its way into our homes. Spring fashion and popular shows and movies often serve as a precursor to interior design aesthetics, offering insight into the colors, textures, and patterns that will dominate the season.

In 2025, this fusion of influences is more evident than ever. The wellness movement, for example, continues to drive demand for biophilic design elements—natural light, organic materials, and indoor greenery—while sustainability remains a top priority, leading to the rise of repurposed and eco-conscious materials. Meanwhile, bold colors and dramatic statement pieces reminiscent of high fashion are making their way into interiors, reflecting the artistic storytelling seen in both couture collections and cinematic masterpieces.

As fashion, entertainment, and wellness converge, expect interiors that not only look beautiful but also tell the story about how we live, what inspires us, and how our spaces support our well-being.

Evoking a Feeling in Your Home

The overarching trend for 2025 is that homeowners want to evoke a feeling in their homes. While there are endless opinions and aesthetics in design, homeowners are seeking emotional connections with their spaces. Whether it’s cultivating a sense of tranquility, nostalgia, vibrance, peace, or luxury, the focus is on curating a mood. Mood boards, personalized color palettes, and unique decor choices are guiding this trend. Your home should be a true reflection of how you want to feel every day.

Biggest Design Trends We Foresee Dominating 2025

Colors of the Year – Browns and Reds Making a Strong Comeback

After years of cool neutrals, warm and earthy tones are re-emerging in a major way. Neutral palettes remain dominant with beige, gray, and white serving as the base, but deep, grounding hues are being introduced to add richness and depth. Expect to see muted burgundy, rustic browns, and mocha accents making homes feel cozier. Colors follow a cyclical pattern, and the 90s-inspired warm hues are back. As the saying goes, what goes around, comes back around!

Finishes, Materials, and Textures

Natural, high-quality materials are defining 2025. Homeowners are gravitating toward organic textures like marble, quartzite, and stone for countertops and surfaces. Wood is warming up, with oak, walnut, and reclaimed wood taking center stage.

A particularly exciting trend is the rise of “living surfaces,” such as unlacquered brass. This material evolves over time, developing a unique patina that tells a story of use and touch. Melissa explains, “Unlacquered brass transforms with every fingerprint, creating a constantly evolving look. But if you ever want to restore it, a quick polish brings it back to its original shine.”

Soft Lines and Spaces

Furniture and architecture are moving away from sharp angles and embracing fluidity. Sculptural, rounded furniture pieces are becoming statement staples, adding a sense of ease and relaxation to spaces. Expect to see plush, curved lounges and sculpted homewares dominating interiors.

Architectural elements are also shifting. Classic arched doorways, reminiscent of traditional European designs, are making a return but with a modern twist—combining clean lines with rough, natural materials. Additionally, open-concept layouts are gradually being replaced by more defined, intimate spaces that prioritize function and coziness.

Bringing the Outdoors In

Nature-inspired design continues to reign supreme. Indoor plants are more than just aesthetic; they contribute to air quality and well-being. Spider plants, for example, can absorb up to 95% of chemicals from the air in just 24 hours in a 200-square-foot room. Incorporating greenery throughout the home fosters a healthier and more vibrant environment.

The Nordic practice of “open-air life” (friluftsliv) is another inspiration for 2025. Simple habits like opening windows for 15 minutes each night, even in winter, can significantly improve air circulation and sleep quality.

Windows are getting larger, and sightlines are being deliberately designed to showcase outdoor landscapes. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors, expansive windows, and natural light integration are making interiors feel more expansive and connected to nature. Melissa puts it best: “The outdoors are people’s new hanging wall art.”

Bathrooms: Functionality Meets Aesthetics

Bathrooms in 2025 are becoming more personalized sanctuaries. Key trends include:

  • Wet rooms – A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom where the shower area is seamlessly integrated with the rest of the floor, eliminating the need for a traditional shower tray or enclosure. Designed to handle full water exposure, this modern, spa-like space often includes a bathtub and is frequently enclosed with a glass partition for a sleek, open feel.
  • Exposed plumbing – Exposed plumbing is a design choice where pipes and fixtures are left visible rather than concealed within walls or ceilings.

  • Micro-concrete in showers – Micro-concrete is a thin, high-performance cement-based coating used to create seamless, waterproof, and durable surfaces in showers and bathrooms. It consists of a mix of cement, polymers, fine aggregates, and additives, allowing it to adhere to various substrates like tiles, drywall, or concrete without needing removal of the existing surface.
  • Marble sinks – Elevating everyday spaces with luxurious natural stone.

Incorporating Sustainability in Interior Design

Sustainability is no longer a niche concern; it’s a major design priority.

Refurbishing antique furniture is becoming a favorite among designers and homeowners alike. Vintage pieces are being repurposed into kitchen islands and bathroom vanities, paired with natural stone countertops for a high-end look with history.

Platforms like Chairish and 1stDibs are seeing a surge in demand for second-hand furniture, offering unique finds that prevent mass-produced repetition. As Melissa wisely points out, “You’re going to see your Pottery Barn table at your neighbor’s house. So be unique!”

Natural materials like stone, wicker, jute, and reclaimed wood are all key elements in sustainable design. Supporting small businesses by sourcing handmade and one-of-a-kind decor pieces is also becoming a top priority.

How Technology is Shaping Interior Design Trends

Smart home technology is making everyday living more seamless, with integrated systems controlling lighting, security, climate, and even window treatments through smartphones. However, as technology becomes more embedded in our homes, a counter-movement is emerging: a return to simplicity.

Many homeowners are opting for tech-free zones in their homes, creating spaces where they can disconnect and embrace slower, more intentional living. This shift is leading to a resurgence in analog experiences—reading physical books, spending time outdoors, and engaging in hands-on activities like baking or gardening.

Outdated Trends to Move Away From

One trend designers are urging homeowners to reconsider? Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP).

“LVP is fake, has an unnatural pattern, and is horrible for the environment,” says Melissa. “It also off-gasses harmful chemicals, which can negatively impact indoor air quality for both humans and pets.” Instead, she recommends embracing natural wood because it never goes out of style, it’s durable, increases your home’s value, and it’s sustainable. She also pointed out that though it may scratch over time, “scratches make your home a reflection of your lived experience.”

Advice from Our Expert: Balancing Trends with Timeless Design

Designing a home that stands the test of time requires a blend of personalization and strategic risk-taking. “A great designer asks the right questions to uncover what has always resonated with you,” Melissa advises.

While trends can be fun to incorporate, the foundation of your home should reflect your long-term tastes and lifestyle. “Take the risk with the all-blue shower if it makes you happy. If you’re worried about resale, remember—YOU are the one living there for the next decade. Make it yours.”

Ultimately, the biggest trend of 2025 is embracing individuality. “Go outside the boundaries of trends and do what you love,” Melissa encourages. When you prioritize authenticity, your home will always feel timeless. Trends come and go, so as Melissa always says, “Let’s make this YOUR home.”
