Where Did the Name Mom's Come From?

If you’ve ever wondered why we’re called Mom’s Design Build, you’re surely not alone. Granted, Mom is a common name, but it’s not commonly used as a business brand. People generally presume that Mom’s Design Build as a company name indicates that the leader of our enterprise is someone who goes by the name, “Mom.” It’s a reasonable theory. After all, small businesses are often identified by the founder or owner’s name. In that case, we might have been called- Jimmy’s Garden World or Sweeney Landscaping Associates Extraordinaire or … well, you get the idea.

But that’s not how our story goes.

As the artful, heartful person that he is, Jim Sweeney went with a less literal moniker when he formed his small landscape design company back in 1993. Our fearless founder based his business name and its values on a philosophy—specifically his mom’s philosophy: People Matter. We still live and work by the foundational belief that People Matter. This includes family and pretty much everyone else. It includes you.

A LITTLE BACKGROUND TO THE BACKGROUND

Jim was one of eight siblings in a lively, loving household. As he clearly recalls, the one thing rising above the chaos was his mom’s unwavering care and strength. (Okay. Make that two things.) Anyway, the qualities he aimed to exemplify in his life and in his business were inspired by his mom’s listening ear, and her devotion as a problem solver and a champion for his spirit. It’s worth noting that this young entrepreneur began his business life at the age of 15, mowing lawns around his hometown of Wisconsin Dells.

(Hmmmm … maybe an inspiration for grand water features and lush gardens? Perhaps.)

So, with Mom being a pretty common name (a lot of women go by Mom) you might think it was already taken for a business name, right? Oddly, it wasn’t. And so, Mom’s Landscaping & Design was off the ground with a mission to serve others and to become its clients’ trusted advisor. Because People Matter.

As work increased and the scope of offerings were beginning to expand, Jim enlisted a sharp design intern: Craig Weckman. Sharing Jim’s passion for a client-focused mindset, this multi-talented hire soon proved to be an integral part of the company and became Jim’s business partner. That was over 20 years ago! Today, Craig serves as Mom’s Chief Operating Officer and all-around “Man of Steel” with a big heart. Anticipating a growth spurt, Jim and Craig moved their expanding venture to a patch of farmland in Shakopee, Minnesota.

How did Mom’s grow from a couple of guys with a lawn mower to become the industry leader in award winning outdoor living designs? Well, along with the nurturing nature of Mom’s business philosophy, our priority has been to recruit talented designers and craftspeople (we’re talking award-winning talent) who share this passion for building and nourishing relationships with our clients. Besides their understanding that People Matter, our service-focused production team have top-notch skill and knowledge, which naturally gives rise to a proven track record as trusted advisors.

BUILDING ON OUR NAME

Mom’s Landscaping & Design gained recognition as a growing business (in more ways than one) and the scope of our work widened further. The stunning outdoor gardens, landscape and hardscape structures, fire pits and patios we were creating just naturally inspired our clients to inquire about decks and porch additions to help connect their homes with the enhanced outdoor lifestyle they were enjoying. Well, one thing led to another, and our landscape architecture services morphed to include an interior design and remodeling division called BellaWood Builders. With Director, Karie Zemlicka designing smart and soulful spaces and guiding seasoned crews and trade partners, this somewhat serendipitous spur of Mom’s has thrived.

In fact, we have ventured beyond porches and patios to transform basements into garden-level greatness, and remodele kitchens and family rooms to have beauty and substance, create functional mudrooms and entryways and … well, see for yourself here.

So, to blend the families of BellaWood Builders and Mom’s Landscaping & Design—and to minimize confusion—the two divisions came together under the name of Mom’s Design Build. It’s a perfect name! We Design indoors and out, we Build indoors and out and we still honor our Mom-inspired core values:

· Be grateful and positive

· Prepare and adapt

· Make a better tomorrow

Speaking of development … To help our clients care for their fabulous outdoor spaces we also provide a third area of service expertise: Fine Gardening. Our team of horticulturists offer classic gardening services as well as hardscape management, arbor care, disease and pest management, pond and spa treatments, mowing, trimming, seasonal container design and install including holiday decorating.

In a way, we are back to our roots, so to speak: helping to maintain your nest.
