Resale Prohibited

by

The ultimate kitchen goals start with a “need.” Maybe your kitchen isn’t functional enough for your growing family. Maybe it’s not an open concept and feels stuffy and enclosed. Most commonly, maybe your kitchen is out-of-date and needs an upgrade. Either way, we’re here to help you with the first steps you must take to get a kitchen remodeling plan started. Home design is intricate and takes a lot of professional insight. Also, remodels can seem excruciatingly overwhelming and it’s easy to put it off for a long time. However, the “getting started” part is easy to tackle! And we can promise you won’t want to put off that remodel any longer after reading this!
Let’s begin!

GET DESIGNERS AND CONTRACTORS INVOLVED ASAP

We’re not just saying this because we’re the experts. Why? A few reasons. The experience and guidance from them will help you move along the process and visualize the space (something that’s really hard to do without a contractor). Also, they will help you make well-informed decisions so you don’t get caught up with random issues along the way. It never hurts to do your research, make sure you select the right person for your job!

WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN

Manifesting is key. To prepare properly for your remodel project, write down all the reasons you want to remodel your kitchen. This will help you effectively communicate your vision with a contractor or designer. Also, it might help you iron out some kinks in what you really want out of the remodel. What’s your motivation behind the kitchen remodel? What is your goal? How do you want to feel about the change to your space? How will this kitchen best match your day-by-day lifestyle? What are the ultimate ‘no-nos’? At the end of the list, make a personal commitment: Change is coming. I will remodel my kitchen. It’s all about the manifestation factor (wink, wink). Oh, and don’t forget to write out your budget as well!

DEFINE: FAMILY KITCHEN? GOURMET KITCHEN? OR ENTERTAINMENT KITCHEN?

This is a huge part of the kitchen remodeling process! At the end of the day, what kind of kitchen do you want? How often do you cook? What type of food do you cook? Do you have kids? How are they using the space? Do you have a game night with friends a lot? Do you need a lot of counter space for food prepping? During this process, get detailed about your day-to-day. Does your husband like to fold laundry in the kitchen? Do the kids like to do their homework on the counter? While kitchens can be aesthetically beautiful, they should also be functional for your life. And it’s great to establish that right away! Also, we don’t know about you, but it’s fun to imagine the hustle and bustle of your life, too.
Set some goals based on these ideas (i.e. here are some to keep in mind):
  • Increase the resale value of your home

  • Update tile flooring or the backsplash

  • Update areas with charging stations

  • New coffee or wine station (yes please!)

  • More functional countertop space

  • Energy-efficient appliance upgrade

  • Spaces to store all your fun gadgets (KitchenAid, toaster, air-fryer; were looking at you!)

HAVE AN INSPIRATIONAL SHOPPING MOMENT!

Now, it’s time to get inspired. Open up a few catalogs. Visit a showroom. A kitchen remodel is one of the biggest purchases you’ll make in your life. So, it’s time to touch and feel the items that could be upgrading your home. If you have a designer, this would be a fun spot to kick off the inspiration, so they can personally see what type of style you gravitate towards and help you make selections based on that.

Learn about brands you like. Understand maintenance care for products and which you prefer. Educate yourself on quartz countertops vs. granite. Get the low-down on how much these things cost and keep a spreadsheet full of them. Pick out paint swatches you like and compile images on Pinterest of spaces you’re inspired by. All of this research helps. And, it truly is the most fun part of the whole process!

SET A BUDGET, SO YOU FEEL AT PEACE WITH NEXT STEPS

This is an extremely important step so that you can build a transparent relationship with yourself and your contractor/designer. And be realistic with what you’re comfortable with!
